King Biscuit Time - 'I Walk The Earth'

King Biscuit Time - "I Walk The Earth" (2000)

"I Walk The Earth" first kissed my ears after I bought my brother a compilation CD for either Xmas or his birthday called The Sonic Mook Experiment which was a club night I attended for a friend's birthday in London. I clearly didn't realise the trendy circles I was in back then as I don't even remember where it was. I do remember it was my first experience of extremely loud indie/electronic pop mixes(another occasion in which I go deaf as I am camped out next to the giant speakers) and a fantastic introduction to break beat! It wasn't until my brother had played the album a couple of times that I heard it but this was one of those songs that make you sit and shut up just for a minute, while you take it in!

Steve Mason, the thinking woman's totty

In May this year, my husband and I went to Brighton as we had bought tickets to see Steve Mason. Who? I hear you say(I got the same reaction many times when telling people what concert I was going to)! He is best known for being one of the founding members of The Beta Band but also released a few solo albums under the names Black Affair and King Biscuit Time. Loving so many singles from his different projects, we knew we owed it to ourselves to see him live. We were not disappointed. The moment that stood out for me though was when Mason and his band mates came back on stage for their encore. Hubby and I took bets(as we often do) to guess what song it would be. I went for The Beta Band's number, Dry The Rain, thinking it would be a sure thing. Then the beat of "I Walk The Earth" kicked in, I was wrong but I didn't care! The crowd lapped it up! It was only a small venue, Komedia, and not completely packed. I was so close, it was fantastic. Singing along with the crowd, I'll never forget the moment midway when the beat cuts out(around the 2.40 minute mark), during the harp bit the whole band stopped playing and bowed simultaneously until the beat kicked in again with the siren. It was weird but worked really well. A new way to make an impact on me!

Got any big impact moments from live gigs? Tell me about them!!

Click here, it's Saturday Night jukebox, let the beat kick in and sit back!!

What more can I say about this song other than "T U N E". The word awesome gets over used nowadays, but in this case I'm happy to use it. Thanks Ms Hunter for sharing this gem

As for a big impact moment.... On Thursday I was in London at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen to watch Scroobius Pip. The queue was taking ages to work it's way into the room. When I got round the corner to the entrance I realised why, none other than Mr Pip himself was at the "Scroobius Pip's Marvellous Merch Stall". Yes he was behind the counter selling his t-shirt and book. I happily paid him my £10 for the book and asked him to sign it. Result, oh and the gig was pretty damned good too. He played his new unreleased album in it's entirety, we got to hear it first !

Great track. My impact moment was trying to save my girlfriend's ribs and my spleen from bursting against a crowd control barrier at a Cypress Hill concert. Each time a popular track came on there would be a crowd surge and we'd get stuck on this barrier. It was the first time I dreaded them playing Insane in the Brain.

The Beta Band are one of those bands for me that I know I should know but have never quite gotten around to listening to. Am now rectifying that in spades - that's my Spotify list sorted for a while. And King Biscuit Time is so up my street too, great track!

First hearing and I like it, does it remind me of somthing on 'screamadelica'? maybe its me....great story as usual

Really odd you should mention Screamadelica, Old Pa - I was thinking exactly the same thing. It has that laid back Andy Weatherall thing going on.

Fly - that is literally an impact moment! I've also learned the hard way not to venture into the "mosh pit" anymore after losing my shoe at a Terrorvision concert. Not exactly hardcore either!
Jon - The Beta Band are great, but if you are a fan of Steve Mason's lazy chilled voice as I am, give his solo album "Boys Outside" a listen. Its one of my top 3 faves of this year. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, try his new dubbed to f**k(I quote Steve himself)album with Dennis Bovell "Ghosts Outside"
