SCOTT MACKENZIE - Whats the Difference Parts 1/2/3(1967)
When you hear the the name Scott Mackenzie you think of 'flower power','naked bodies','the 60's' and of course San Francisco but there is more to my namesake than that.
So what's the difference if we live, die or do anything, why do we bother even getting up?....this is quite a step from wearing flowers in your hair and enjoying the free love feeling of Woodstock. This is one of the saddest songs I think I have ever heard. It was written by John Philips of Mamas and Papas fame.
I first came across this album, 'The Voice of Scott Mackenzie' in 1973 for 50P in Woolworth's and was absolutely knocked out with it and it quickly became a favourite until it suddenly disappeared. I tried for years to replace it and it was probably 20 years later I managed to find a CD version. It is great stuff, 'What's the Difference' being the highlight. It also has a great version of Tim Hardin's 'Reason to Believe' see earlier post.
I believe this is one of the great lost album gems!

commentsMy word! I always had Scott Mac. marked down as a loss with his 'flowers in their hair' nonsense but this is fab. Written by John Philips? I have one of his albums (the one Dylan ripped off for the cover of 'Desire') and there some fine songs on there. You picked the album up for 50p in Woolies? Those were the days! Question: How come there are three different versions here? Were they all on the album? I'm now looking for the chords so I can ruin it at home on the old geetar! Thank you.
ReplyI remember there were 2 versions on the album...I must check it out....I think also John Philips wrote a final verse and they recorded it later. I know the John Philips album and yes Desire is almost the same....is Topanga Canyon on that album..what a great song that is.
