Fountains Of Wayne - 'Sink To The Botttom'

Musical Medicine.....a track that helps the Chang beer go down perfectly

Fountains Of Wayne - 'Sink To The Bottom' (1996)

Back in the 90's Fountains Of Wayne were amongst the founding members of a genre I championed that Flycasual lovingly?!? dubbed 'Obscure American Guitar Bands'
They came back to my attention last week, this song in particular, whilst I was sitting poolside at my hotel in Phuket, Thailand nursing a Chang beer and contemplating the amazing achievement I had just accomplished earlier that afternoon.
Allow me to take you back in time to 2012 when Mrs London Scouser (aka Shellhunter) and I as well as Old Pa & Ma were holidaying in Thailand. Shellhunter decides to get her PADI licence as she is a lover of all things pertaining to the ocean. I however didn't fancy it... fast forward to last week and that has now changed. I am officially a certified PADI Open Water Diver (thanks to Denis at Bubba Diving Phuket), something I'd never had dreamed of a few years earlier. It's not that I was afraid so much, it was more that A) I couldn't be arsed and B) the bottom of the ocean and all that swam within it didn't really float my boat (if you'll pardon the maritime pun). My views have now changed considerably as it's quite literally like nothing on earth I've ever seen or could imagine. Okay I've seen 'Finding Nemo' but this was like being part of that film (albeit without the talking)... The sights are so amazing that I can't really do them justice with my limited vocabulary. suffice to say that if you have ever, even for one second harboured the idea of learning to dive I would advise you to jump to it, remembering to put your regulator in your mouth and hold your mask as you jump in.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 30/03/2014 - Real Estate, Pure X, Liars, Rihanna, Hello Caller

Five tracks that were a marriage made in heaven!

Flycasual:-
Liars - 'Mess On A Mission' (2014)
The party has been overrun, it's late, unwanted friends/your dad/the in-laws/your neighbours (sounds like a crap party anyway) have all over stayed their welcome. Solution? You play a 'Shifter', that'll get the buggers moving! 'Mess on a Mission' is a definite shifter, I love it and don't worry Liars, this really is a good thing. I was enamored with the experimental Brooklyn trio's last offering, 2012's WIXIW and Mess, their 7th album has just been released. Time to throw a bash I think.

Liars official website here....

London Scouser:-
Hello Caller - 'Harkening Darkness
Following on from my TOTW last week, I'm still in my 'Austin Phase' and have chosen Hello Caller for my latest offering. Taken from their 2012 album 'Dark Twain' this is a really pleasant track to listen along to featuring a few instruments that I like. They've got some strings, a snare and what sound like a ukulele I think... but what do I know... I used to listen to Stock, Aitken & Waterman !!! The album is definitely worth a listen to as well.

Sfw:-
Pure X - Starlight (2014)
“Starlight” is the first single from Austin Texas' Pure X which features on their forthcoming LP, Angel.  It's jangly, psychedelic feel takes you on a musical trip that feels like you're floating on clouds.  Perfection!

Shell Hunter:-
Rihanna - 'Cheers (I'll drink to that)' (2011)
Not normally my thing but how can you deny the sentiment?! Especially when you are
at the swim up bar in Thailand and it comes on.

My track of the week for sure....

'Don't let the bastards get you down,
Turn it around with another round,
There's a party at the bar,
Everybody putcha glasses up!'

Who's for another Chang?!

Old Pa's Corner :-
Real Estate - How Might I Live (2014)

Here is a great track from Real Estate called How Might I live (2014) and is from the new album Atlas (2014). Just fantastic pure pop, exactly what it says on the tin. Nothing more nothing less. It is just class. I have to say they remind me so much of the fabulous Teenage Fanclub. It is about time we heard from them too. I have been listening to this album quite a lot over the past couple of weeks. Great stuff, great stuff to get you humming along. Give it a go you may be pleasantly surprised.

Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - 'Television, The Drug Of The Nation'

Hip Hop Classics....straight outta Camberley y'all!

Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy...shhh, not now Celebrity Big Brother's on!

Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - 'Televison, the Drug of the Nation' (1991)

I've finally got my new born baby boy to settle, so I collapse on to the sofa, bleary-eyed and flick through the channels on the TV, something I don't do that often. With good reason too, whether it's daytime TV or the wee small hours, I'm rewarded with MTV's Valleys, Loose Women, Lorraine, Jeremy Kyle, Homes Under the Hammer, Extreme Couponing, Eddie Stobart Trucks & Trailers, Secret Eaters etc etc. It's excruciatingly mind numbing. In fact I'm praying my son fills his nappy with an explosive poo so that I can go and change it instead.

Loose Women, "you can't say that...it's only 12:35...ooh you are naughty!"

Although the two weeks paternity leave has been enjoyable, I'm glad to see the back of all that garbage I pay my TV license for. Of course it reminds me of a little song I know which is still relevant now as it was then.

Michael Franti's Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy gave us a bonafide Rap classic with a powerful message, Gil Scott-Heron in it's stinging commentary on American society delivered with the same venomous fervour as Chuck D. There's no hiding place. Taken from their 1992 debut album, Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury.

Michael Franti and Spearhead are still going strong, All People his 8th studio album was released last year (2013). Check out his website here....

DYLAN COVERS #142 Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window x 2

Use your arms and legs it won't ruin you
WILKO JOHNSON AND ROGER DALTREY - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (2014)

This is a track from Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey's new album Going back Home (2014). I have listened to the album and it is just fabulous. The Band are just so together and Wilko does a Sterling job on Guitar. It is a stonking set of good honest Rock'n Roll.  Roger does a pretty good snarling job on CYPCOYW and it is as good a cover version  as is out there.

For good measure here is a live version of the song recorded at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire 25th Feb 2014. Listen to Roger at the end of the song, he is clearly enjoying himself.

If you have a look you can find the whole concert that some kind fan has shared.

It is great that Wilko is still out there doing what he does best,  despite having Pancreatic Cancer and refusing chemotherapy.  We wish you all the best Wilko old son.

Just keep on rocking forever!

TWO FOR THE MONEY - T.REX - Mambo Sun/Ride a White Swan

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

VACATION XTRA
New friends to be made!

 T.REX - Mambo Sun

Hey! I am on vacation for 3 weeks, 1 week in the UK on either side of two weeks in Thailand. If you do not hear from me, don't dispair, at least you know where I am. To keep you going here are two track from T.REX.

The second one in particular means a lot to me. I was leaving from East Kilbride in Scotland to go and live in London as young strippling of a lad, I was 21. I received a little collection from work and bought All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and Elton John's first album. With the change I bought Ride a White Swan which was the break through single before they hit the 'stratocastor'. Brilliant single. Briiliant memory.

The second choice is Mambo Sun from the Electric Warrior album. Not only is it one of my favourite T.REX songs, it is when my new girl friend (now Old Ma) and I, had a meeting of musical minds (it does not happen very often) she bought the album. (saved me doing it) T.REX at their very very best.

'I got stars in my beard
and I feel real weird'

Now thats poetry!  Englands greatest dead poet!  'I said that!'

Lucky Old Pa I hear you say!

T.REX - Ride a White Swan

FOOTNOTE :

'Lucky Old Pa!  My Arse'  you would have heard me say!

I have had to cancel my Holiday due to a possible infection on my toe, a day and a half to go before departure. (case already packed). I wont go into the gory, but as I have diabetes (controlled) I was given a course of strong Antibiotics and have to see the Doctor after the course. A date after we were sheduled to depart for Thailand.

Can't take any chances with theses things...so here I am stuck in Sunny Spain. I am going to loose most of what I paid out. Oh! and with Old Ma's mini costing 700 euros last week. Well you can't win 'em all.

But in all reality,  I am better off than a pig on its way to the abattoir or a brave squaddy about to step on an IED or a child in India abducted and torn from her parents and put into prostituton...or....or....

What have I got to worry about???

Seriously folks, no big deal...Over there I might have contacted HIV (immaculate conception) or imbola virus...or liver failure....or complete freak out!!!

but that's not me!

Have a great time Shellhunter and London Scouser. I wish I was there with you to share a family bucket of Chang.
There is only 4 left, get another family bucket in!

More Footnotes next week!!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 23/03/14 - De La Soul, Ringo Deathstarr, Posse, Disclosure, Hurray for the Riff Raff

Five tracks that blew the Budget this week!!

Flycasual:-
De La Soul - 'Vocabulary Spills' (2014)

I haven't been able to listen to a great deal of new music recently as my hands have been pretty full with the arrival of my baby boy but I have been listening to a lot of De La Soul. It recently was the 25th anniversary of the classic genre defining album, 3ft High and Rising (25 years!!!!) and I decided to dust of the CD and educate my eldest son of 4 3/4 (as he likes to remind me) with it on the school run, he particularly enjoyed the in-lay art work as well as the above of Batman dry slapping Robin of the new single. I was also safe in the knowledge that I won't get ambushed with any profanities (one of the few Hip Hop album). The late J Dilla produced, 'Vocabulary Spills', is taken from the brilliantly named forthcoming album, Smell The D.A.I.S.Y., a tribute mixtape to the aforementioned, sadly missed producer, out on March 26th, with a full length album to come later in the year entitled, You're Welcome. This sounds like exactly what I need and a much needed return from one of Hip Hop's living legends.

Download the song for free from De La Soul's website here...

Catch De La on tour in the UK this year...

London Scouser:-
Ringo Deathstarr - 'Brightest Star' (2012)

My band of 2013 was Black Books and earlier this year I decided to go through my 'Austin Phase' and looked into all manner of artists based in or around Austin, Texas to see if I could unearth another gem. The name 'Ringo Deathstarr' immediately stood out so I gave them a listen. I started with their 2012 album 'Mauve' which I've seen described as very 'My Bloody Valentine'. I'll admit to having heard of MBV but I don't know their music enough to compare, however I may give them a listen as Mauve is impressive. Apart from the vocals it reminds me of Nirvana which ain't too shabby. My standout track is different to most of the offerings in that its a lot more chilled out and atmospheric as opposed to the rocky guitar-led anthems. I'm about to jet off to Thailand for a couple of weeks and think this song will be perfect for late nights on the beach sipping a Chang or 6. Regretfully without Old Pa & Ma who've had to cancel at last minute which has dampened my spirits somewhat. I dedicate this track to you OP.

Sfw:-
Posse - Shut Up (2014)
Seattle trio Posse, have managed to give me a Track of the Year contender in March with the glorious 'Shut Up'. The arrangement is so spacious, with subtle guitar strumming, laid back drumming and monotone vocals from singer Paul Wittman-Todd. It is so "shoe-gaze", that i'm currently staring at my converse. This is an instant classic...believe me!

Shell Hunter:-
Disclosure - 'F For You (ft. Mary J. Blige)' (2014)

I think I must really be out of touch these days! This Brit Bothers Duo were nominated for a Grammy this year for Best Dance/Electronica album but I can't recall many of their tracks! A second week of musical shame for me but I am determined to put that right! This track features on their highly acclaimed debut album 'Settle' released last summer and they even played at Latitude festival 2013. It was previously released but as one of the few songs without a collaboration with a guest vocalist. Interesting that it has just been rereleased with vocals from the sister of soul herself, Mary J. Blige. I think it is a great mix, the right formula of elecronica and a classic R'N'B voice. As much as I'm not a clubber, I'd love to hear this loud and wouldn't mind throwing some shapes to it.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Hurray for the Riff Raff - End of the Line (2014)

Here is a little taster from the new album Small Town Heroes (2014) by Hurray for the Riff Raff.  What a great name that is too. Makes you think of  lack of self confidence. This one hits all the right spots for me.

'If it sounds Country Man'  I am crazy about that violin!

Alynda Lee Segarra  formed the group or collective as it is know and is the main song writer.. She looks good and has a great distinctive voice. I have heard a few tracks from the album, it is high quality stuff.  I will be getting this album immediately on release, This gal is going to be big .For some reason I think about the Pogues! and I don't know why ? Maybe she drinks Special Brew...ooo! I would kill for one right now or 15 Changs!!

Nothing to do with the Pogues but check out St Roch Blues to from the album....I like this girl! b>

Smoke City - 'Underwater Love'

Musical Medicine.....a track that's like a healthy insurance payout for the soul!

Smoke City - 'Underwater Love' (1997)

Water is supposed to be a thing of beauty and power providing life for all things! At the moment I'm pretty pissed off with it! The last week has been filled with hassle and expense due to a leak in our living room ceiling. It started of as a small brown patch but grew daily. We luckily had pipe and central heating cover so called them out to have a look. Before anything was really done, the plumber refused to investigate further as due to the age of the house being in from the 70's, there was the possibility of asbestos in our artex. Great, so we had to fork out 90 quid for a guy to come in and take a scraping which took less than 5 minutes and send the sample away to the lab. Good news though, it was clear so I waited in all day for a plumber to come out on a Saturday. 3 hrs later, the 2 leaky pipes in question have been replaced but leaving a massive gaping hole in the ceiling. For the next 36 hrs water continued to drip constantly through the hole forcing us to empty out an old cat litter tray every 2 hours. The next day London Scouser had enough, There's no way that is just excess water from the original leak, there has to be another one somewhere! So, Monday was another day spent waiting for a plumber. Two more gaping holes and a couple hours later, the 3rd leaking pipe is fixed and no more water pouring through the ceiling! Then yesterday we get the delightful news from our home insurance survey....they will pay to get the ceiling fixed! Hooray!

Bloody leaking pipes....

I can't stay angry at water for long though, this time next week I will be at one with it again, scuba diving in Thailand. I can't wait! I will feel like a graceful mermaid and will be imagining this excellent song by Smoke City whilst I glide along. I fell in love with this track when I first heard it on the Levi's advert, they had a knack for picking a winner of a song every time.

SMOKEY ROBINSON - You Really Gotta Hold On Me/Just My Soul Responding

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES

The life and Soul!

SMOKEY ROBINSON - You Really Gotta Hold On Me

Dylan called him America's Greatest living Poet, now that is a hard compliment to live by. I am sure he has dined out on that statement many many times. But was Dylan just being a little ironic? Only he knows I suppose.

Beside all that, Smokey Robinson and his Miracles were part of the Great Tamla Motown stable and they had some fabulous hits during the sixties. Even the Beatles themselves acknowledge Smokey with their brilliant cover of You Really Gotta Hold On Me on their first album release.

Smokey had a solo album out on 1973 which I remember buying after I heard the magnificent Just My Soul Responding. Sadly I never bought anything else by Smokey.

Anyway enjoy these two great tracks.

Fossil Collective - Half Light

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Fossil Collective - Half Light (2013)

The Fossil Collective are a two-piece from Leeds that consist of multi instrumentalists David Fendick and Jonny Hooker.  This track features on 'The Water EP', which is a bit of a favourite of mine, and is a song that hits you like a harpoon and stays with you (a harpoon would do that).

With haunting harmonies, heartfelt lyrics and a hypnotic, atmospheric arrangement. It leaves you wanting for more. The perfect accompaniment for a frosty morning walk and a dose musical medicine for dealing with those Tuesday Blues...

If you are a fan of Men with Beards, like the gentle stroking of a six-string, or just a miserable bugger, Subscribe to our Spotify playlist and read more Tuesday Blues here!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 16/03/2014 - Timber Timbre, War On Drugs, London Grammar, Hard-Fi

Four tracks to mark the arrival of Flycasual's new baby boy....

London Scouser:-
Hard-Fi - 'Move Over' (2014)

I saw recently that Hard Fi had released a greatest hits compilation so I immediately downloaded the album on Spotify. I was a 'Massive' fan from the moment I first heard 'Cash Machine' and the fact that they come from Staines (where I used to work for a few years) helps !! Whilst listening to all the songs that I knew, this song started and I thought initially it was a Fun Loving' Criminals track. I felt I was being transported to a smoke filled jazz club somewhere, although maybe not vocally. It's a very different style to what I'm used to from them but its definitely a grower.

Sfw:-
Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (2014)

Here is something inappropriate for flycasual to listen to whilst feeding the baby.  When I first heard it I thought it was by Richard Hawley however it is by Timber Timbre, a Canadian folk rock band, whose sole core member is singer-songwriter Taylor Kirk. With its warm organ, slow tempo an gorgeous Saxophone solo (by Arcade Fire associate Colin Stetson).  (Note: the video is set in a strip club and is very NSFW).

Shell Hunter:-
London Grammar - 'Hey Now' (2014)

I hate being wrong. In the middle of last year a friend of mine asked me if I'd heard of London Grammar and of course I said no. He told me they were going to be big and I shrugged it off as if I hadn't heard of them then it couldn't be possible. Now after being blown away with 2 of their singles, I feel musical shame. London Grammar are a trio from London that dabble in ambient electronica and trip hop having got together in University. The beautifully haunting vocals (a little bit like Florence Welch) are guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Don't be like I was and check out their EP Metal & Dust, released in Feb last year. Highlights are this track and Strong. They are gonna be big....oops.

Old Pa's Corner:-
War on Drugs - Red Eyes (2014)

Here is a brilliant track from American Indie Band War on Drugs it is from their third album Lost in Dream (2014).  Well Kurt Vile is a former member and his solo album was one of my favourites of last year and one of his songs was in my Tune Doctor Top Five of the Year.

This track is already a contender for my TOTY for 2014. This is a top track.

Slick Rick - 'It's a Boy'

Hip Hop Classics...straight outta Frimley Park Hospital, y'all!

Need a Children's Story?

Slick Rick - 'It's a Boy' (1994)

On wed 12th March my wife gave birth to a 8lb8 baby boy, our second son, he's a veritable bruiser and it's absolutely baffling how he actually fit inside her. As first time parents 5 years ago, it was real rabbits in the headlights stuff but it's funny how 'it' all comes back to you....fast. Even smashing up a babygrow and nappy change combo in under 5 mins, last time round was at least half an hour with a sweaty distressed dad and baby setting off the rest of the bairns on the ward. This time I was also unfazed by the inaugural poo, Meconium, which is a gooey, tar like substance, despite being only armed with warm water and cotton wool which only achieves in spreading it around his bottom further, I mopped up the paste no sweat.

It was very nice of Ricky Gervais to pop by and help. Do not awaken the beast Ricky!
Anyway, it's all a bit primeval, feed, sleep, poo repeat but so far so good. We are tired but happy and ready to commence musical indoctrination as soon as we get home. (5 years ago we could only settle my son to sleep with the smooth sounds of Gregory Isaacs. This time Cradle of Filth?)

'It's a Boy' is taken from the UK born MC's 3rd album, Behind Bars, which was recorded while ehm....behind bars for attempted murder, not so slick Rick. Probably the best track from the album...who knew that it would be this significant 20 years on! One of my favourite old school rappers, Slick Rick, known for his laidback storytelling flow (influencing the likes of Snoop Dogg or Lion, whatever he's called now) is still going strong and is currently touring the US, check out his official website here....

DYLAN COVERS #140 Stereophonics - Subterranean Homesick Blues/Positively 4th Street

Kellys in the basement!

STEREOPHONICS - Subterranean Homsick Blues (2013)

Here we have two Dylan covers from Kelly Jones and the boyos from Wales. I do like Kelly's voice and these are two passable performances. The first one is from a BBC2 radio broadcast on the 2nd March 2013 and the other appears on the Stereophonic's album Performance and Cocktails (2010).

THEM - 'Don't Look Back' / 'Hey Girl'

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

ANGRY YOUNG VAN

Here it comes!

THEM - Don't Look Back (1965)

All Van Morrision fans out there will of course  know Van started of  as part of  the magnificent Them. They recorded two albums in the mid sixties and they are a great indication of where Van was heading. They are both nothing short of brilliant. Van's voice is raw and gives you goose bumps with its' sheer power.and quality.

Both these tracks are personal favourites, but the albums are filled with high quality tracks. Check out Them's cover of  Dylan's I'ts all Over Now Baby Blue and you will see where Beck got his sample for Jack-Ass.

Listen also to Here Comes The Night probably one of the most perfect pop/rock singles ever.  Not far behind is Gloria, another stormer.

There is a compilation album of both Them albums containing extra tracks and it is a must have in any collection.  It is called  The Story of Them (1997)

THEM - Hey Girl (1966)

Bowerbirds - Tuck the Darkness In

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Bowerbirds - Tuck the Darkness In (2012)
This came on the randomizer when I was driving home from work last night and left me in a tranquil haze.  It is by North Carolina's Americana folk band, Bowerbirds, and features on their third and critically acclaimed album, The Clearing.  With it's slow driving bass, subtle guitar and perfect orchestration, the track was the perfect accompaniment to watching the sun set over the sea.... Hypnotic & Brilliant. A perfect end to a beautiful day.

If you are a fan of Men with Beards, like the gentle stroking of a six-string, or just a miserable bugger, Subscribe to our Spotify playlist and read more Tuesday Blues here!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 09/03/2014 - Wild Beasts, Perfect Pussy, St Vincent, Dirtmusic, Coldplay,

Five tracks that put the spring into Spring....

Sfw:-
Wild Beasts - Sweet Spot (2014)

"Sweet Spot" is the latest release from Wild Beasts, which comes from their latest LP Present Tense. It's bonkers to think this is their fourth LP, as it only seems like yesterday that they appeared on the scene. The guitar melody is great, then when the synth kicks in you'll think you are in Tron. If you don't like it straight away, give it a few goes, it is infectious.

Shell Hunter:-
Coldplay - 'Midnight' (2014)

You love to hate them, you hate to love them blah blah blah. That doesn't matter to me, if I like the sound of it then I don't care who it is. The other morning I was driving to work on an early at stupid o'clock (4am) when the XFM DJ revealed that Coldplay has posted a new track on their website but no other info about where it was from or what for. I wasn't really concentrating at the time, just watching road. By the end of it, I felt all warm and fuzzy. It was such a different and chilled out song, I really enjoyed it! When I got to work ended up hearing it 3 times before 7am and even on 2 different radio stations. By then I was hooked. Give it a go, it's worth it.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Perfect Pussy - Interference Fits (2014)

With a name like that they just had to be heard. I can't stop playing this, it gets a little bit addictive. I am really interested now to hear the full album which incidentally is well under 30 mins long. The album is  Say Yes To Love (2014). I am pretty pleased I cum by this track and I hope this little taster moistens you ear buds.

You may need the lyrics which are quite hard to decipher:

Interference Fits

…I thought it was amazing and I almost cried
Nothing that comes and comes is forever
…coming in
And conversation so check on
Since when they say yes to love?
Hey,hey,hey,hey,hey
Hey,hey,hey,he,hey
They say yes to love
…They say,yes,yes,yes,yes,they said

Flycasual:-
Dirtmusic - 'Red Dust' Feat Samba Toure (2014)

Samba Toure's album, Albala, was one of my favourite albums of last year, sombre and poignant, it was the Desert Blues at it's very best (read about it here). So naturally I was excited when I heard he features in Dirtmusic's forthcoming fourth album, Lion City. Aussie/US band Dirtmusic were originally formed as a Roots/Folk band but started recording in Mali after meeting another Desert Blues favourite of mine, Tamikrest at the annual 'Festival Du Desert'. Collaborating regularly with local musicians, they subtly incorporate their 'Western' influences with the bamboozling brilliant Bamako talent. Samba Toure lends his vocals to the atmospheric 'Red Dust', a reflective dub journey through a hurting Mali.

Dirtmusic and Samba Toure on Glitterbeat records...

London Scouser:-
St Vincent - 'Digital Witness'

I first heard of St Vincent (AKA Annie Clark) when I downloaded a playlist a few years back. Amongst the 100 or so tracks was a song called 'Sleep All Summer' which was a collaboration between one The National & St Vincent. As a big fan of the former I immediately honed in on the track and wasn't disappointed, so much so that I put the song on the latest CD compilation that Shell Hunter and I had compiled.
Fast forward to 2014 and the release of her eponymous 4th album. Digital Witness is the second release from the album and has a dancy feel to it which reminds me a little of 'LaRoux' I've listened to the album a couple of times and on the strength of these 2 listens I will be checking out her back catalogue for sure.

GUEST SPOT #67 - Rufus Wainwright - 'Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk'

Here's another Guest Spot from TuneDr's mate Dave. He sees the world a little bit differently and is not afraid to speak his mind. Fancy telling the world about a song you love, gig you've been to or just a musical memory? Click here to submit one now!

My friend Sadie and I visited snow covered Fairmount Indiana, home town of James Dean, over 10 years back just after Rufus Wainwright's second album came out. Patrice, landlady at our guest house, said she loved 'our Queen' and told vegetarian Sadie "we eat a lot of meat round here' in a mildly sinister manner. They didn't allow alcohol, not very rock and roll in the home of American's most famous rebel - so we were glad to be asked for dinner and drinks by David & Lenny owners of the James Dean Gallery. Originally from New York City, they were super cool, interesting, full of pop culture gossip and very kind. They told us Rufus Wainwright had been to visit recently. 'Who?' They played us TV clips songs and interviews. With songs about unrequited love, desire, being drunk on 5th Avenue and references to Dirk Bogarde movies and Bea Arthur we were hooked, it felt like Rufus was writing songs just for us. On our return to London, Rufus played some Camden dive for about £10 to a handful of people and I've seen him on every tour since and I'll be going to the Royal Drury Lane show in April. He's no longer our little secret, people are welcome to £75 stalls seats. We're happy he's a star and we'll be happy in the cheap seats up in the Gods remembering how we first heard him in Fairmount.

DYLAN COVERS #139 Arlo Guthrie/Julie Felix - The Gates of Eden

 Gypsy Queen

ARLO GUTHRIE - The Gates of Eden (1973)

Here are two different versions of The Gates of Eden,  the first is by Arlo Guthrie and is from his album Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys (1973). You can also find some live takes by Arlo by searching Youtube.

The second version is by Julie Felix who has covered many Dylan songs, but this is quite an interesting version due to the choice of instruments in the background. You can find this on her album Flowers (1967).

GNARLS BARKLEY - Who's Gonna Save My Soul

I have never been a great lover of American series, it is all that Hollywood razz. Even barmaids look like film starlets. Give me the Sweeney or the Minder any time. There you get proper British Barmaids, gals that have been round the block a few times.

Saying that there have been exceptions, you can not fault The Sopranos or Sargent Bilko.

Flycasual asked if I ever watch Breaking Bad as he heard it was pretty good. The IMDB rating was sensational, a whopping 9.6 a score, unheard of before. I thought I would watch a couple of episodes to check what the fuss is about.

Am I glad I did. It is brilliant, great actors, great characters, brilliant humour. If you have ever watched Pulp Fiction and remember the shock moments (how can you forget then) I will tell you this, there are many such moments in this grand little gem.

Simply, if you don't know, it is the story of a guy who finds he is dying of cancer. He is a Chemist turned School teacher who decides to 'cook' ice (methamphetamine) and try and make enough money to support his family when he goes.(gets dead)

Oh! boy! his life just get more complicated and involved after each episode. I am completely hooked just like an Ice junkie. I have just finished series 1 and will be watching series 2 tonight. I must have my fix.

These two great tracks are both from series 1. I particularly like the Gnarls Barkley track when I heard it. I am also a maniac for Natalie Merchant's voice.

Trevor Borden - Giants

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Trevor Borden - Giants (2013)
Here is someone new that I've been listening to of late. Trevor Borden was born in Kenya (where his parents were working), went to high school in Portugal and eventually settled in Santa Barbara, California.

Giants is a track that caught me off guard - I couldn't remember where I'd found it - until I'd realised that I'd downloaded via Noisetrade  (where you can download the Giants EP for free).

For such a young chap, his material does seem a bit good.  Give it a download/listen - it's solid songwriting.

If you are a fan of Men with Beards, like the gentle stroking of a six-string, or just a miserable bugger, Subscribe to our Spotify playlist and read more Tuesday Blues here!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 02/03/14 - Moodymann, Barzin, The Coves, Cage The Elephant

Four tracks that Putin the dampeners on a new Cold War this week...

Shell Hunter:-
Cage The Elephant - 'Come A Little Closer' (2013)

I love the feel of this track, its make me feel like I'm driving down a desert road at dusk with the top down feeling the cooling air on my face. I have heard a few of Cage's previous songs but nothing struck a chord in me like this does. They're a 5 piece from the best named place in the US....Bowling Green, Kentucky! I assumed they were just another rock band but from what I hear, they have an everchanging and eclectic sound spanning blues, funk, rock and punk. Knowing that and liking this song as much as I do wills me to give their album from last year Melophobia a 'closer' listen!

Old Pa's Corner:-
The Coves - Let the Sun Go (2014)

Here is a track from an album from a boy girl duo the Coves  from Lemington Spa. It does not take too much to work out that they must have been brought up on doses of the Velvet Underground and washed down with a Mazzy Star dessert. This of course is not a bad thing. A very good upbringing I say. I am looking forward to some more helpings from their album Soft Friday (2014) out this month.

Flycasual:-
Moodymann - 'Lyk U Used 2' Feat Andres (2014)

I have been thoroughly enjoying Moodymann's self titled album this week all thanks to a recommendation by Gilles Peterson (regrettably not a personal one) and it's a delight of Soul, Funk and House. With a bit of Outkast's Andre 3000, a sliver of Sly Stone, a hint of Gil Scott-Heron and at times freakier than Prince, it certainly makes for a colourful and intriguing listen. But unbeknownst to me, this is DJ Kenny Dixon Jr's (aka Moodymann) 11th studio album and has been on the go since 1992. He's actually probably better known for helping create Detroit's signature House sound. For me a great discovery and album well worth your attention.

Sfw:-
Barzin - All the while (2014)

Apart from the impending World War, I've had a pretty good week. In particular, it has been good for music discoveries of which this is one. Barzin (Barzin Hosseini is Canadian singer/songwriter whose material has been compared with Low & Red House Painters. He has released 4 albums to date, with his latest titled "To Live Alone in That Long Summer". I've been listening it to is all week and it is really quite good - All the while reminds me of early Radiohead (The Bends) and we all know that and a little bit of Melancholy is goes well with the Sunday lunch.
