Salt N Pepa - 'Push It'
Salt-N-Pepa - 'Push It' (1987)
This post has been pending for almost a year! It came to mind when I was still pregnant with little Shell Hunter about 8 months ago. I was in full on nesting mode, frantically getting everything ready for her arrival. One of the things that was on my mind a lot was the all important "playlist" for during my labour. I was in a dilemma. Was I seeing it through rose tinted specs, her popping out to I Was Made To Love Her by Stevie Wonder? Or would one of my favourite songs be forever tinted with the painful memory that I couldn't stomach listening to it again? I wasn't prepared to take that risk! I didn't make a playlist as such but London Scouser and I did put together a few songs current to the time. For example: Return To Sender by Elvis which was playing in Frankie and Benny's for one of our last lunches together before the big day, Always The Sun by The Stranglers which I heard in the car on one of the many journeys to the tip and Push It by Salt N Pepa. A colleague at work joked this should be on my labour playlist when it came on one day at work. It really made me chuckle thinking how apt it would be!
In the end, when the big day came, we did listen to the playlist a couple of times but I decided I wanted something more random and leave it to chance what she was born to. I was adamant I wanted Absolute 80s on but because of the gas and air I was on, I was totally spaced out and songs started merging together! It did help getting me into my happy place zone though and I firmly believe it played a big part in me coping so well, not needing any pain relief!
I enjoy hearing about other people's birthing songs. It is such an unforgettable event that whether you like the song or not, you will always remember it. Flycasual's first son was born to Lets Hear It For The Boy by Deniece Williams, which came on the hospital radio. A friend of mine said the docs put Abba on during their cesarean which lightened the mood. Anyone else have any memorable songs?
So to finally reveal what 80s song little Shell Hunter was born to (sadly I was a little disappointed when London Scouser told me as ironically after all I've said, I didn't even remember!) .....
............Prince's 1999!
