As someone who regrets some of the paths i've taken, I admit to being a little jealous of Nick Mulvey.  He started out playing Piano & Drums then moved onto the guitar.  At 19, he moved to Havana, Cuba to study music & art and spent the long days learning and the "evenings jamming and drinking rum".

He then returned to the UK and studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies to study Ethnomusicology (I had to google it to find out what it was) and then went on to form the Portico Quartet, who were nominated for a Mercury music prize in 2008 for their debut album, Knee-deep in the North Sea. 

 He left them to go solo in 2011 and is about to release his debut album 'First Mind' on the wonderful fiction records.  

Why is it the older we get, the more we regret? I must remember Tom Rush's mantra

Mrs S & I are big fans of The Portico Quartet and have seen them live a few times. I initially thought that Nick's move to become a singer/songwriter was an odd one, but, as you point out, he's a bit of an all-rounder so it's probably no surprise that he wouldn't be satisfied with one area of music for long. When 6Music first played 'Fever to the Form' we were massively underwhelmed, but there's definitely something about the tune. It's a grower.

That is some CV! I can just imagine studying music all day and jamming with lashings of rum in Havana. Has he done anything Latin of African? Good track to boot, he listened in class.
