DYLAN COVERS #146 Phish/Ani DiFranco/New Rising Sun - Hurricane
R.I.P. Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter
For something he never done! |
Well this weeks Dylan Covers just had to be in respect of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter who passed away this week. I remember driving home from work one Saturday back in late 1975 and hearing the song for the first time, it just knocked me away. I just had to hear it again, that violin sound stuck in my head. It was a few weeks later I saw the famous live recording shown on the Old Grey Whistle Test. It was very rare to see Dylan on film in these days. He looked intense, Scarlett looked sensational. You new he meant it.
Here are three different takes of the song the first is by Phish and was recorded 11/14/85 at the Memorial Auditorium Basement, Burlington, VT7. There are several albums around that feature this.
The next version is by Ani DiFranco and can be found on her album Swing Set (2000)
Finally, we have a live studio version by New Rising Sun (not a Jimi Hendrix cover band) and this is rather good and sticks pretty close to the original. It was recorded live at an AB session in Ancienne Belgique.

NEW RISING SUN - Hurricane
Comments
Ani Difranco - interesting. Kind of edgy and with some attitude.
New Sun Rising - they are an Hendrix covers band? I wonder how that works? Interesting that they are named after a song from 'Renaldo and Clara' by Ronee Blakley. Nice version. My favourite of the three.
