TRACKS OF THE WEEK 17/01/2016 - Kate Tempest, Money, Damien Jurado, The Mispers, New Order

TRACKS OF THE WEEK

Sfw:-
Damien Jurado - Exit 353

Damien Jurado returns with the reverb heavy 'Exit 353', the lead single from his latest album Visions of Us on the Land. It continues (2012’s) Maraqopa and (2014) Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, which follows one story of an unnamed character as he loses his way home as he heads out to find himself. It has been produced (again) by Richard Swift and feels psychedelic, yet epic (in a scale sense, rather than a chav way)

Old Pa's Corner:-
Money - I'll Be The Night (2016)

I liked the title of their new album 'Suicide Songs' you know where you stand with a title like that. This is the first track I listened to and just love it. I will certainly check out the album. Suitably dark and dark enough for me.
My track of the year so far. With a Name like Money I hope they don't 'change'. pittthetic!

Flycasual:-
Kate Tempest - 'Europe is Lost' (2015)

A brutal observation on the current state of play in Europe or rather the UK in general, full of blistering lines delivered over a raw, metallic beat. This is Kate Tempest at her very best and why she is a blog favourite. It seems David Cameron and his crew were on the receiving end of her verbal broadside as she performed this at the Labour Party Xmas party last year. Dave'll probably think twice about taking a 'selfie' or going with Sam for his 'two for one' drinks down the pub now. Vicious!

London Scouser:-
The Mispers - 'Weekend' (2015)

I know I'm a few months late, but I've found my summer song !!! The Mispers, who describe themselves as an alt-rock quintet based in London, released this back in June but it passed me by unfortunately. In case you were wondering, like me, Mispers is a Metropolitan Police term for missing persons. I find it a really pleasant upbeat song. Vocally it reminds me a little of The Macabees, who are one my fave bands. Definitely worth a listen

Shell Hunter:-
New Order - Tutti Frutti (2015)

The first "tracks of the week" are a little bit sad for me. You end up finding all these songs from last year you missed out on. They end up in a sort of limbo for music. They can't be on your best of from 2015 and because they were from 2015, they now can't feature on your best of 2016 if you wanted them to. So complicated! Anyway, luckily I took a chance on this track and it just made the cut despite only hearing it a couple of times. I loved it instantly and it gets better every time. It's a fab 80s sounding greatest hits of New Order featuring Elly Jackson (La Roux). The only thing missing is "we're playing for England, Ing-ger-land!" The album Music Complete was out in September and must be worth a visit.

FC - Wow. Thought provoking and excellent
OP - You stole it!!! Reminds me of an alternative 'Fairytale of New York'. Morrisey-esq
SH - The beginning sounds like a dirty trip to Hamburg
LS - sorry, a bit disappointing

Winner - OP

Any time Damien Jurado shows up on a tracks of the week list, there'll have to be something extraordinarily good to top it. Kate Tempest comes close, but Damien takes it for me!

SFW - really like this guy. He is still the one of the most memorable moments of Latitiude. Also sounds like Fleet Foxes
OP - I like this as well, who is it they remind me of? Shed Seven or Inspiral Carpets?
Fly - Bo! She packs a punch and this is excellent. Up to standard
LS - Yep, full of summer and dandelion fluff. A hit for me, just what I needed!

Sfw, This is great but too short! Will check out the album. Video is good too, I want to know what happens!

Old Pa, Suicide Songs, you know what you're going to get with a title like that indeed and the track is suitably downbeat. This one reminds me of the Waterboys.

LS, pleasant and inoffensive...a rockier One Direction?!

SH, It's a toss up between New Order and Damien this week but I think this may edge it. I think this is a remix version. Either way it's a great tune a up to NO's standard. I especially like La Roux's verse. I saw this too late, I think in Dec but I heard another good single earlier in the year.

SFW - It's weird, first time I heard this track it was whilst watching the video. I was enjoying the film so much I don't even remember the song. It was only when I listened again without the video that I realised what a good track it was.
OP - My least fave of this week's offerings. It's okay, but I wouldn't miss not hearing it again.
FC - I heard this at the back end of 2015... Very, very good. She can do no wrong in my eyes or wars.
SH - Enjoyable without being amazing, worthy of another few listens.

And the winner is Kate Tempest
