Luke Kelly - The (Bonny) Shoals Of Herring
WEDNESDAY CLUB
THE SILVER DARLINGS
SILVER DARLINGS(herring shoals)
I was out with the dogs and thought about my Grandpa, I wanted to do something to remember him. I thought of the title and tried to make it happy, a celebration rather than the hardship of searching for the herring. He had a hard life, and was a lovely man. I wish I knew more about him.
SILVER DARLINGS (herring shoals)
we leave the harbour
on our way
sun is shining
gulls are screaming
smell the fish in the air
the boat she rolls
we catch the breeze
I smile
to first mate Johnny Dole
were on the run
our hearts they sing
we follow in search
of the silver darling
I'm trusting the sea
all the swell
the high waves
the foam the spray
we go on their trail
follow the shoals
take in the wind
I wave
to first mate Johnny Dole
it is all I remember
life at sea
it's in my heart
everything I feel
follow silver darlings
deep in my soul
without regrets
my friend
and first mate Johnny Dole
were on the run
our hearts they sing
we follow in search
of the silver darling
