DYLAN COVER # 21 - Dave Mason - All Along the Watchtower x 3

DAVE MASON - Along the Watchtower (original)

I was really excited, I was visiting a new small record shop which had just opened round the corner, they had second hand records and you could make exchanges, perfect! The guys were very into it all and we hit it off right away. Then suddenly this song came on blasting out on their enormous Bose speakers. 'There must be someway out here'  (there was no way I was leaving)....All Along the Watchtower but who was it by? They informed me it was from Dave Mason's new self titled album (1974). What an introduction it has, especially when the guitar 'whows' at the beginning. They had to play it over and over again for me.

AALTW must be one of Bob's most covered songs and take away Mr Hendrix, then this must be about the best version around. Needless to say I later walked out of the shop with my new purchase closely guarded under my protective arm. All I needed now was a new amp and some Bose speakers.

The term PLAY IT LOUD was invented for this song.

There is also a Live version on his Album, 'Certified Live' and it is almost as good, what do you think?

And finally the below version is taken from a Live XM Radio Broadcast released 2007, which is up there as well. He is still delivering the goods, great job Mr Mason!

Finally, the story goes that Dave and Hendrix were at a party and Dave introduced Jimi to AATWT and he immediately hit the studio and the result was, well we all know the result.

I can't hear the original or any of the others on the pop-up player. Not sure why it's not working for me as it's usually OK. The YouTube clip sounds solid but I'd like to hear the others. Never mind. On the subject of AATWT...how about XTC's amazing version?
