WEDNESDAY CLUB - The Wagoneers - Good Fortune/Atlanta - PT 1 of 2

MIDWEEK CRISIS you are bored, then come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got the Wagoneers, a mystery, and a trip to Montreal, does that excite you?

THE WAGONEERS - Good Fortune(1989)

When I lived in Jeddah  we had access to many tape shops it was hard to pass one by without going in and browsing . You never came out of a shop empty handed, it just wasn't done. On many of these tapes they added some extra tracks as fillers if there was any space at the end. One time there were several tracks which just blew me away, two of these tracks I have included here. But who was the group?. I tried everything to solve the mystery, it was freaking me out. I even got a Country and Western expert to have a listen, but to no avail. It was driving me crazy.

This was C&W at it's very very best. The guys voice dripped with saddness, I loved these songs.

I was sent to Montreal for several days and at first lunch time I headed to HMV to browse, I went to the C&W section, just in case I could find this album. Suddenly I saw a CD with a group I had never heard of, I picked it up and there were these songs. It was one of these momentous moments, as if I had discovered a pot of gold. I could not wipe the grin of my face. I had solved the mystery in Montreal. The group were the Wagoneers.

I looked round and on a board it said U2 are playing tonight at the Olympic Stadium, there was some tickets left and a phone number. It was a sign, I had to go.

Continued next week

THE WAGONEERS - Atlanta(1989)

For some reason I always think of 'The night they drove old Dixie down' when I here this song, They could be paired together.

Not heard of The Wagoneers before but I agree they sound great. I will now keep an ear out for more. Thank you! Isn't it wonderful to be able to share music?

By the way, my brother lived in Jeddah in the early 80's, employed by the Bin Laden family (d'oh!), an dhe used to buy lots of pirated tapes for me. I ended up with tons of good stuff on cassette via Saudi Arabia.

SB - I believe they only made 2 albums...talking about tons of tapes I ended up giving all my 'tons' away to a charity shop...but it was great at the time....and yes it is great to share music....I have picked up so much new stuff in past year....ye can na beat it!

Haha, brilliant! Those taps shop, you're right it just wasn't the done thing to come out empty handed and then off for a Shawarma!! Heady. "like finding a pot of gold" love it. Haven't listened to track yet but will wait until the work horn sounds and I get I go home. Great post!

That's a great story - and an interesting glimpse into a part of the world I know nothing about too. It's so frustrating when you hear tracks but don't know who/what they are isn't it - these days I end up trying to memorise a line or two of the lyrics and then try Googling them, but before then it usually just had to remain a mystery!
When I worked in a record shop, customers did sometimes come in and sing snippets of songs to us in the hope we'd identify them: "It goes like this...da da dee dah!" I don't think I could ever have been so brave myself though.

C - if I was in the pub next door then went to the record shop (always fatal) I may have sung the song...I believe there is an app now that can find track if you play a snippet...my daughter uses it all the time.

OPC, I use Shazam, it's prevented me from tearing out my hair in frustration on many an occasion!

Hold it fellas, whilst all these apps and gadgets are obviously fine, isn't there something magical about the great 'lost' song? OK, it might take you twenty years or even forever to track it down but when you do - the bliss. Don't you think we have it too easy today?

All - maybe I have been a bit cynical about Mp3 and LPs....there was nothing better than getting your pay and heading to the record shop then to the off licence going home holding your new LP it was yours it was part of you it was what you lived for the art work the words everything it was existens(wish I could spel;l) think I'm pissed but hope you know what i mean.f
