TRACKS OF THE WEEK 16/03/2014 - Timber Timbre, War On Drugs, London Grammar, Hard-Fi

Four tracks to mark the arrival of Flycasual's new baby boy....

London Scouser:-
Hard-Fi - 'Move Over' (2014)

I saw recently that Hard Fi had released a greatest hits compilation so I immediately downloaded the album on Spotify. I was a 'Massive' fan from the moment I first heard 'Cash Machine' and the fact that they come from Staines (where I used to work for a few years) helps !! Whilst listening to all the songs that I knew, this song started and I thought initially it was a Fun Loving' Criminals track. I felt I was being transported to a smoke filled jazz club somewhere, although maybe not vocally. It's a very different style to what I'm used to from them but its definitely a grower.

Sfw:-
Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (2014)

Here is something inappropriate for flycasual to listen to whilst feeding the baby.  When I first heard it I thought it was by Richard Hawley however it is by Timber Timbre, a Canadian folk rock band, whose sole core member is singer-songwriter Taylor Kirk. With its warm organ, slow tempo an gorgeous Saxophone solo (by Arcade Fire associate Colin Stetson).  (Note: the video is set in a strip club and is very NSFW).

Shell Hunter:-
London Grammar - 'Hey Now' (2014)

I hate being wrong. In the middle of last year a friend of mine asked me if I'd heard of London Grammar and of course I said no. He told me they were going to be big and I shrugged it off as if I hadn't heard of them then it couldn't be possible. Now after being blown away with 2 of their singles, I feel musical shame. London Grammar are a trio from London that dabble in ambient electronica and trip hop having got together in University. The beautifully haunting vocals (a little bit like Florence Welch) are guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Don't be like I was and check out their EP Metal & Dust, released in Feb last year. Highlights are this track and Strong. They are gonna be big....oops.

Old Pa's Corner:-
War on Drugs - Red Eyes (2014)

Here is a brilliant track from American Indie Band War on Drugs it is from their third album Lost in Dream (2014).  Well Kurt Vile is a former member and his solo album was one of my favourites of last year and one of his songs was in my Tune Doctor Top Five of the Year.

This track is already a contender for my TOTY for 2014. This is a top track.

LS - I loved Hard-Fi's debut, however they never seemed to follow it up.
SH - London Grammar have slowly won me over. Nice
OP - A real contender in the TOTY top 5, 10 or 20! Got the feel/drive of an Arcade Fire track - Brilliant!
FC - Hope you & the wife are getting some sleep.

Hard-Fi - never really bothered listening to them but this is alright. Nice bassy motif.

Timber Timbre - VERY Richard Hawley! I like the 'vibe' but that what's that about wanting to 'dance with a black woman'? Odd. Personally, I want to dance with ANY woman, black, white or in between who'd be brave enough to take up the challenge.

London Grammar - it's funny how are instinctive prejudices can just blind or deafen us. I decided I 'hated' this group from the moment I read about them. Something about them ticks all the boxes that makes me feel rather bilious. Thing is, I was right. Nearly everything I dislike about modern British pop music.

War On Drugs - Nice little groover.

Re: London Grammar - note how my feelings about them also make me lose my ability to differentiate between 'are' and 'our'. Never went to Bristol Grammar!

LS, I loved their debut album, especially 'Move On Now' (no relation?) but my interest waned thereafter. Interesting Jazz reference as it reminded me of The Cure's 'Love Cats' a bit which is what the band were trying to achieve. Not a bad tune all round.

Sfw, Phwoaaar! This is brilliant, love it. Bits of Tindersticks, Richard Hawley thank goodness I've finally had time to look back at all the posts. Sax being the clincher and a bit of tit.

SH, I too missed out on the London Grammar bandwagon, this is the first track I've properly heard and it's great. I don't quite get the animosity towards them either, irrespective of what you read about them it's music you should judge. I've probably contradicted myself at some point.

Old Pa, great track, great album....I've been listening to it loads lately.

Great selection folks.
