DYLAN COVERS # 172 - Don Mclean - Masters of War x 2

The Jester stole his thorny crown!

DON MCLEAN - Masters of War

Here are two versions of The Masters of War sung live by Don Mclean. One is a young Don and the other is is from May 2010.  I am not sure if the young Don version is the same as what is on a take from his album Solo, released in 1976. It sounds pretty close, but the tack on Solo does not have the talking introduction..

Nice to see that the Don is still going strong. You will find other live versions on You tube.

Interesting to hear a version from each end of his career so far. On balance I think I prefer the angry young Don version to the more resigned approach taken by the Arthur Scargill lookalike.

Nice, Don. I always think Don could have become a lot more than he did. His early records were powerful and the songwriting sharp but he went a bit mushy. Both versions good here. Probably agree with The Swede that the Young Don wins it but the added back-up on the 2010 take is a nice touch. Arthur Scargill! So true.

Both versions sound to me quite similar, both lacking bite in any of the many verses ..... wonder if anti-war songs today have teeth at all. To be sure, Dylan himself has rendered at least half a dozen ( or probably more ) versions of this classic song, each one going a very different direction and keeping you awake all through.

Rajan - well said can't say i have heard anybody sing a better version than anything Bob has done himself.
TS/SB - Arthur Scargill ...I love it, bring back the 3 day week.
