WEDNESDAY CLUB - Waterboys - Piece Of Iona/Alexander Brothers - The Dark Island

WEDNESDAY CLUB TAKES THE HIGH ROAD

THE WATERBOYS - Piece of Iona (Live)

Every time I hear this I think of a a visit with Old Ma to the Isle of Skye. It was a great trip and we tried to get a room in Dunvegan Hotel and were surprised to find that it was fully booked. We went up the road a few hundred yards and got a room in a Hotel run by a Marie McLeod.  After settling in we decided to go back to the Dunvegan Hotel as we heard some music and wanted to see what it was all about.

The Bar was packed out with about 30 or 40 guys mostly, wearing kilts and all with a musical instrument of some sort. Mostly it was accordions, but there were bagpipes, drums, guitars, flutes you name it. These guys were holding their annual Scottish Dance Band convention. They came for the week-end to play music and drink, drink more and play more music. It was just fabulous, There were always some groups playing or individuals taking up a solo spot and occasionally they all joined in together.

It was probably one of the best nights I have ever experienced.

It went on to the early hours when we decided to head home. When we arrived at our Hotel there were no lights on. I rang the bell but there was no movement. After sometime we went to the back of the Hotel and I saw a small window at the top of the fire escape which was open. I thought I may just be able to squeeze through. (I would not be able to do that to-day).

Suddenly I heard a rustling sound and out of nowhere a nanny goat was chasing me trying to give me a head butt.

Eventually I managed to get in the window and let Old Ma in.

The next evening after dinner Marie asked if we would like to try her very own digestive, which had a secret ingredient. It tasted of Drambuie and Whiskey but had a pale milky look.

'I bet you do not know what the secret ingredient is?'  asked Marie.

'Goats milk'  I instanly replied!.

To finish, here is a nice version of the haunting The Dark Island by the Alexander Brothers of Nobody's Child fame.

Wonderful post. Where Old Pa & Old Ma go, adventure is bound to follow! Is that one of you with the motorbike?

I'd love to go up to the wilds of Scotland one day and when that day comes, I'll be in touch with you for some tips and recommendations.
