Tori Amos - 'Cornflake Girl'

Thursday I'm in Love..a chance to share some of my favourite cereal!

Where's my cornflakes?

Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl (1994)

Ah Tori Amos, nobody believes me but we shared a moment, she and I. I remember hearing the excellent 'Cornflake Girl' at a New Years eve party at Sfw's, standing in the nerve centre (the kitchen) discussing the virtues of her unique and rather saucy piano playing style. It cemented my love for piano, the video is case in point (even dirty rotter Conan O'Brien licks his lips), Phwoar!

Our brief encounter took place back in 95', I was a steward on board Eurostar, delivering service with a smile. I was standing on the platform, meeting and greeting our first class passengers in my Canary Yellow blazer, tiger print bow tie and Village People style hat (no joke). I knew that it was going to be a day like no other as I was confronted by none other than Tori Amos and her entourage of 3 friends on a day trip to Paris. Untapped passion simmered when our eyes briefly locked, as I went to help with her bags, the train whistled and steam covered the platform, we were ready to depart. As expected it was an uneventful trip, that was until I bumped into her at the end of the carriage prior to our arrival and she asked me if I was coming back to London that night. My heart skipped a beat, the piano playing songstress was going to ask me for a drink, I stammered that I was returning on the exact same train. "great" she said "could you look after my magazines? I don't want to haul them around Paris". Gutted but still hopeful that this was a Rock n' Roll euphemism for hooking up with mere mortals (maybe there was her phone number in one of the mags!!....there wasn't). I told her not to worry and obliged to look after an unfeasibly large collection of uninspiring home improvement magazines. On the turn-around in Paris I couldn't go for my usual stroll and pose around the Quartier Latin but instead had to sit/sleep on my prized collection of magazines like some sort mother hen and her eggs. Dreams of a Rock N' Roll romance were all but shattered when my knob of Supervisor said he didn't need me for the return and instead wanted me go on an earlier and busier train. My desperate protests fell on deaf ears when I told him I was looking after a superstar's magazines (albeit illegally). "Tori who? I don't care I want you on that train".

Tori Amos, never got her mags back and I never saw her again. I like to think that there's a song out there she wrote about that handsome but bastard of a steward who took off with a bunch of woman's interest magazines.

Tori??  Bloody hell is that you love?
I've sort of stopped following her after that brief liaison but later, on doing a bit of research for this post, I subsequently found out that she has released a 12th studio album last summer, called Night of the Hunters. I was also surprised that the natural beauty, rather disappointingly decided to go down the route of plastic surgery but despite this, it won't stop me giving the new album a listen, it may rekindle that magic we once had!

Fabulous story, sir! I'll also admit to an interest in Miss Amos that involves her looks rather than her music. I do kind of like the stuff I've heard by her but I've never followed up that side of things much. I always enjoy a good story like yours - 'The day I nearly met/jammed with/run over in my car' etc. I've a couple myself, though not as good as yours and Tori's mags. Maybe you could put a call out for others' tales of near-misses with the stars? Did you you keep the magazines? I would have.

Thanks for the comments you know they're always appreciated. @SB, I did the honourable thing and left the mags at lost and found with a nice note (phone number of course). I don't think I'd have kept them, I mean I didn't see the point of holding on to Tatler Homes or Home and Garden USA. I would have made a fortune out of it and if I did keep them, well let's just say I already feel a bit like Kathy Bates' character on Misery. As you Tunedr love to hear people's musical stories but it has been difficult getting people to contribute, we'd love to hear your 'near misses'. Email me and we'll definitely feature it on out guest spot!!

Haha! Yes, they would have had little monetary value but I think I may have been tempted to use 'Will you come up to see my Tori Amos mags' as a desperate chat up line! Still's me! Have you ever seen the episode of 'The Big Bang Theory' when Sheldon realises he is in possession ssome of Leonard Nimoy's DNA? Being a fan can get a it weird. Kathy Bates! I hear you. I put together a little, rather more mundane, story for you soon.

LOVE this song. Reminds me so much of living in Seville. I've seen her live a couple of times. The best was a teeny weeny gig in the smallest, least popular bar at uni. "Little Earthquakes" had only just come out, nothing had charted yet & noone knew who she was so there was hardly anyone there. She was and is amazing to watch.

Hi Kate, Seville, what a perfect place to have an association for this song. Seeing her in that small venue must have been equally amazing, as u can probably gather I was quite fond of her at the time of Little Earthquakes. Have u heard any of her later stuff?

SB, "come up and see my Tori Amos mags", I like that, though flicking through 25 shades of green for the bathroom feature will def not work as a chat up line (unless you're with Kirstie Allsopp of Location). I have heard lots but have not seen any 'Big Bang Theory', I can be suspicious of American sit coms but a could probably really do with some Leonard Nimoy DNA right about now.

One day I'll tell you about my cringe-worthy meeting with the one, the only Debbie Gibson

I can't wait Mr Scouser, I'd like to hear how you can possibly redeem yourself from that encounter.

Having been a (proud) card carrying member of the Debbie Gibson Fan Club I was really happy when she was cast as Sandy in the London stage show of Grease in the early 90's. Craig McLachlan was Danny and Shane Richie played Kenickie. Anyways, long story short... I was fortunate enough to be given 2 tickets to see the show and meet the cast backstage afterwards. I took a female friend of mine along (integral to my embarrassment) and after the, yes, amazing show I made my way backstage with the other competition winners. I took along the CD inlay of Ms Gibsons current album - Body, Mind & Soul which she signed - "To Neil, Stay Cool !!" with a love heart no less ( I still have it too) I then moved away and proceeded to meet the rest of the cast. At this point, Mr Richie entered the room and knowing my friend fancied him. I shouted to her in order to get her attention "OYYY DEBBIE, come over here quick" yes that was my friend's name also...... My idol at this point looked at me with a mix of shock and disgust, as I attempted to melt away and leave.

Excellent tale! "to Neil, Stay cool", oh the irony!
