Elvis Presley - 'Tomorrow is a Long Time'
Here is 'The King' singing a song by the 'Jester' (before he stole his 'thorny crown' as said by Don Mclean). This is fabulous to behold and I feel I should just bow down and pay homage. It's actually a great version and it is one of Dylan's favourite covers and I can see why. It is slowed down and has that lovely country feel, bring on the 'Nashville Skyline'. If only Bob had shared the chorus, it would be one of the stand out tracks on that country album. What do you think?
Dylan of course has covered Elvis too... two songs, 'It's Alright Mama' and 'A Fool Such as I', come to mind.
Now here is the question, who is the greatest? Dylan or Elvis? That's a tricky one! Ask my wife, she and millions of other guys and gals will scream Elvis. If you are reading this, then I know what your answer will probably be!
In the 50's, everybody including Dylan and me, wanted to be Elvis. But then, in the 60's, everyone wanted to be Dylan, including The Beatles and me. (The company I keep).
So, who do you think is the greatest and why?

commentsElvis does a fine job here and I can see why Bob loved (probably as much for the fact that it was ELVIS covering him as much as anything). Personally, I still prefer Rod Stewart's lovely 1971 version (which was my own intro to Dylan). As for who's the greatest? I suppose it's impossible to say. Certainly, I think Bob would admit that without Elvis there's be no Dylan. Elvis had intuitive genius but Dylan possesses that plus a high level of artistic genius too. For me, if there had been no Bob the landscape to late 20th popular music would have been entirely different (and probably for the worse)...so Bob wins.
ReplySB Good comments..remember it well from 'Every Picture Album' Rod always did a Dylan cover on early albums, 'Only a Hobo' 'Mama you've been on my Mind' Rod does a good version of 'Love minus Zero' on the album made for Lady Di, when she snuffed it...not that I'm puting my hands up to buying that one. Greatest artist....I will go for Engelburt Humperdink.

Replyflycasual: I suppose Chuck can think whatever he wants but he can't get away from Elvis's influence, for good or ill. Yes, without The King, probably no 'Bring The Noise' or 'Black Steel'. Well, maybe.
ReplyI'm a Dylan fan so he wins but I wonder if it's fair to compare the two since Elvis died at such a young age. It's hard for me not to over estimate Dylan's recent resurgence in the comparison of the two. I instinctively do not see Elvis doing as well in later life.

ReplySeeing as Elvis got me into Dylan, i'll have to say Elvis but i recently saw Bob perform pelvic thrusts on stage and wiggle his hips so i'm not so sure anymore.

Chuck D This is just a undercover racist. He says that Elvis was racist, but who knows the career of Elvis knows very well that this is a lie. Elvis was a very generous person, and did not care about that crap color.
