London Scouser:-
The New Pornographers - 'Whiteout Conditions' (2017)

As mentioned in a previous post I became aware of TNP due to them supporting 'Belle & Sebastian' and I always keep an eye out for anything new. When I heard this I immediately started tapping my feet along to it, not so advisable when driving however as I've already been done for speeding on the motorway in a 50  mile an hour zone. This is the title track from their latest album, and once again they hit the spot with their upbeat electro sound and great vocals.

SFW:-
Wilco - '(What's So Funny Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?' (2017)

Wilco have recently released the Nick Lowe classic “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding”, which was a hit for Elvis Costello in 1974. It's a great version which is a bit slower than the original and would not sound out of place on any of Wilco's full length releases.

Ah-Ha - Stay On The Roads

WEDNESDAY CLUB

CHOICES

REDWOOD TREES OF HEATHERSIDE CAMBERLEY

AH-HA - Stay On Thes Roads

We all have to make choices?

THESE REDWOOD TREES

50 degrees in Al Nahda Park
drag me to the Wheat
all the buildings reach for the sky
trying to escape the heat
always there for every day
the redwood trees stand tall and proud
guarding the Longlands Way

You made the choice
it was yours to call
you choose the riches
of these green fields
turning your back
on the glitter ball

In the distance Burj Khalifa
head on to the Goose
the Irish Village a comfort brings
with secrets in their juice
always there on your side
the redwood trees stand tall and proud
guarding the Heatherside

Heart of the Palm Atlantis
in the Carpenters arms
the greatest mall that ever lived
with its gifts and charms
it took one thousand years
these redwood trees stand tall and proud
guarding all your fears

You made the choice
it was yours to call
you choose the riches
of these green fields
turning your back
on the glitter ball

Ryan Adams - The Empty Bed

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters/Alt-Country/Americana or Indie-Folk, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Ryan Adams - The Empty Bed

Ryan Adams - The Empty Bed (2017)

Regular readers will know how much of a fanboy I am of Ryan Adams, but before this turns you off, you must checkout The Empty Bed.

It features on his Prisoners (B-Sides) which was released a few weeks back. You may be shocked that Prisoners (A-Sides) didn't have me purring like one of his cats, but this is magical.  When you consider that the album was written about his divorce from Mandy Moore I was expecting a Heartbreaker type album, but it turned out to be more like Springsteen.  When this popped up as the last track on the b-sides it had me feeling like the end of the Empire Strikes Back.  I'd give it a 10 on the sad-o-meter.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 21-05-2017 - War On Drugs, Nick Mulvey, Cigarettes After Sex, DJ Format & Abdominal

London Scouser:-
The War On Drugs - 'Thinking Of A Place' (2017)

11 minutes of pure bliss...
...
...
...
Ok so I'll add a little bit more... In 2014, Tune Doctor went on tour to the Latitude Festival and one of the stand out artists was TWOD who had scored a massive 5 out of 5 with 'Red Eyes'
This is their first release since the album 'Lost In A Dream' which featured the above mentioned track, and it does not disappoint in the slightest. Vocally it reminds me of The Eagles in places, what do y'all think ?!?

SFW:-
Nick Mulvey - Unconditional (2017)

Nick Mulvey has just released his first material since his 2014 debut First Mind. ‘Unconditional’, which was produced by Ethan Johns and Dan Carey will appear on his forthcoming second album and it comes with a short film directed by Björk collaborator Bastian Glaessner.

It sounds like Nick Mulvey....but wait, it is! Put on your BBQ, get yourself a craft beer and enjoy the sunshine!

Flycasual:-
DJ Format & Abdominal - 'We're Back' (2017)

Proper, no nonsense, head bobbing Hip Hop from the dynamic duo of UK's DJ Format and Canada's Abdominal. Making middle aged Hip Hop headz smile the nation over I'm sure, as this track reminded me of one of Kid N' Play's rap battles from House Party. I sort of wanted to draw the curtains, wear calico baggy clothes and perform variations of the Running Man, or maybe I did? Dubious dance moves aside, I still got it going on.....as do DJ Format and Abdominal. 'We're Back' is taken from their 5th album, Still Hungry out earlier this month. WORD!

Old Pa:-
Cigarettes After Sex - Each Time You Fall In Love (2017)

Fancy a fag, or even sex. I have given up both. If only I could give up booze I could die unhappy.  Enough of this rubbish.I like their name and I love their sound too. Dreamy and sad. Like Hope Sanoval backed by Joy Division with Martin Hanett at controls.

R.I.P Chris Cornell

Chris Cornell - 'Can't Change Me' (1999)

I'm still reeling about today's news. Chris Cornell, one of rocks truly magnificent talents was gone at only age 52. I couldn't believe it, I was convinced it was some sick joke. For as long as I was aware he existed, there was no one else and probably never will be, with a more perfect rock voice.

For more than 20 years, I have been a huge fan. I have lots of little memories scattered over the soundtrack of my life. It may sound over dramatic but it really is true. From singing along to Black Hole Sun with a friend in my 6th form smoking room and blasting Spoonman over the jukebox in the Rifleman pub when I was 16 to seeing him perform live in Las Vegas at the Pearl in 2007. I remember buying a Soundgarden demo single, Burden In my Hand from an old school music shop during lunch in Twickenham and sneakily listened to it on repeat through my A-level English class. I had his picture pinned up on my desk when I worked at a courier company and was over the moon when he embarked on his solo career from which this track was his first single. He proved himself a seriously convincing front man again with the Rage Against The Machine guys, that's no mean feat. London Scouser introduced me to Temple Of The Dog which won my heart, that voice made me melt. LS also had the privilege of meeting and escorting the man himself at work, remembering to ask Chris to sign a single for me which will forever be treasured.

It's with a heavy heart that I write this post but thankfully Chris will live on in the music, nothing can change that. I'm off to watch Singles now so RIP Chris, Say Hello To Heaven.

Bobby Fuller Four/The Clash - I Fought The law

WEDNESDAY CLUB

LAW BREAKER

BOBBY FULLER FOUR - I Fought The Law

ON THE RUN

I keep looking over my shoulder
as I head on down the road
I better be fast
I'm caught by the past
no way can I settle down
I pick up my bags
and head out of town
and leave my girl behind

I watch my back
keep my head down
be careful what I say
I walk in the shadows
and trust no one

I keep looking over my shoulder
as I head on down the road
It's my regret
that folks won't forget
the bad things I have done
my cover is blown
so I go on the run
and leave my girl behind

He came to me from nowhere
left without a kiss goodbye
It's not any sin
I fell blindly for him
all his sweet talk and lies
he just took me in
and left me to cry
I am the girl he left behind

I keep looking over my shoulder
trapped in my endless life
no man I trust
but it's what I must
to survive life on the run
I'm doing the time
for what I've done
and think of the girl I left behind

I watch my back
keep my head down
be careful what I say
I walk in the shadows
and trust no one

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 14-05-2017 - David Bazan,The Bright Light Social Hour, Willie Nelson, Depeche Mode

Tracks Of The Week

Old Pa:-
Willie Nelson - God's Problem Child (2017)

This fabulous track from Old Willie's latest album. It feature the magnificient Tony Joe White and Leon Russel. Just a great song Tony Joe White song with great backing and delivery. Nothing more to say than that.

London Scouser:-
The Bright Light Social Hour - 'Tear Down That Wall's (2017)

I've been listening to this track for the past few weeks and have been meaning to share it with the masses. It sounds like it's from the 60's or 70's and at first I thought it was an old track that I had stumbled upon. But it was released on January 20th, which just so happened to be the inauguration date for a certain Donald Trump...I've since found that they formed in 2004 and hail from Austin, Texas... A city that I've found so many great artists from in the past few years, the most notable being 'Black Books'.

I dare anyone to listen to this and not bloody love it

SFW:-
David Bazan - 'Care' (2017)

This is new to me but I love it! The intro reminds me of an 8-bit computer game, or is it Blade Runner, but who cares? ;-)

It's by David Bazan and is a synth-drenched masterpiece which asks that all important question - “Can men and women not be friends?” and I'm sure it touches on a man and woman who indulge in extra marital nonsense, but who am I to judge? It's produced by one of my favourite producers Richard Swift, which must mean it is great!

Flycasual:-
Depeche Mode - 'Cover Me' (2017)

A track that sounds like it could have been lifted from the B-side to the classic Violator and that's a good thing. 'Cover Me' is my standout song from Depeche Mode's latest album, Spirit. For me it is what they do best, a dark and atmospheric piece of electronica along with David Gahan's aching vocals taking me back to circa 1990. A time of spots and bumfluff with lots of brooding.

Macy Gray - I try/Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline - I fall to Pieces

WEDNESDAY CLUB

MY FRAGILE HEART

MACY GRAY - I Try

FRAGILE  - I have always liked the idea of you feel you are getting stronger after she has left you. But if you see her or hear reference to her you crumble and fall to pieces, we haqve all been there!. Here is my attempt :

FRAGILE

I don't look over my shoulder
I've walked from the past
time to move on
feeling strong
I'm meeting some friends
to share some drinks
with laughter and craic
I feel I'm back
It's going well
until someone mentions your name
I hold my breath
I need some air
make some lame excuse
I have to be somewhere

It's clear to me
that I've not got free
I'm still under her lock and key
so I shuffle home
to my lonely room
I'm a little bit fragile you see

I've gathered up myself again
I'm ready to join the race
I may go to a pub
or even a club
hoping to meet someone
music's playing loud
I'm on the right track
I feel I'm back
it's all good
until the DJ happens to play our song
the lights spin
I need some air
can't stay in this place
got to get outta there

It's clear to me
that I've not got free
I'm still under her lock and key
so I shuffle home
to my lonely room
I'm a little bit fragile you see

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 07-05-17 - Donald Byron Wheatley, Scott Matthews, Goldfrapp, Weezer

Tracks Of The Week

Flycasual:-
Goldfrapp - 'Anymore' (2017)

Late to the party (as always and not fashionably late either) but instant gratification from Goldfrapp. I heard this and thought that is the kind of burbling bassline that buffaloes my wurzel and added it straight into my shortlist of the best tracks of 2017. However, I'm not so sure about the 'Mad Max meets sand in your pants' video. 'Anymore' is taken from Goldfrapp's seventh studio album, Silver Eye, which was out in March.

Old Pa:-
Donald Byron Wheatley - Smoking Gun

Hey! Sam I know who this sounds like, we can all see who has influenced you, but that does not matter, this is fabulous and I can't wait to here some more from you Mr Donald Byron Wheatley. Great video too.

Check out Dylan's Sooner or later one of us must know.

London Scouser:-
Weezer - Feels Like Summer (2017)

I've always been a fan of Weezer, ever since I heard 'Undone' & 'Buddy Holly'. They seem to bring out a great album and go under the radar, well all least my radar, before coming back with another great track. This is no exception, it's got a great anthemic chorus which I was singing along to almost immediately. This is from their 'to be' released 11th album and I'm looking forward to it.

SFW:-
Scott Matthews - Steal My Star (2017)

The last few months have seen some great releases but it would be wrong of me not to share this gem by Scott Matthews. Scott Matthews? Who is he? Well you should remember his excellent debut single 'Elusive', (It was also covered by the lovely Lianne La Havas) which featured on his 2007 debut album 'Passing Stranger'. Despite some strong follow up material, I haven't really spent a huge amount of time listening to him. That recently changed when hearing his 'Home Part 2' album, and in particular, 'Steal My Star'. It evokes his early material yet is perfect in 2017.

A Winner!
