R.I.P. - MCA / Adam Yauch - 'I Don't Know'

Beastie Boys - 'I Don't Know' (1998)

I'm stunned to have found out this evening that Beastie Boys co-founder Adam Yauch, aka MCA, has died at the unfeasibly young age of 47. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and despite radiation therapy and surgery it looks like he may have finally succumbed to his illness.

Not only has it obviously left a huge void for his family and friends but for music and Hip Hop in particular where the Beastie Boys help lay the foundations for the genre. With 8 albums spanning 25 years, they went from tabloid headline grabbing New York Punk brats to influential and accomplished musicians and have recently been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 'I Don't Know' is sung by MCA and features on 1998 album Hello Nasty and shows how much of an eclectic band they are.

Personally I'm completely gutted, The Beastie Boys are probably my favourite band and have been a soundtrack to my life over the years. I remember my dad buying me 'Licence to Ill' back in 1986, it was my first 'proper' album, I loved it and never looked back since.

I'll be digging out my VW chain and I'll be wearing that like a winner's medal fo' sho'!

Sniff....

Tragic news. Although part of one of the most influential collective of musicians, he was a film maker, buddist and a skater- which for me, made him one of my heroes.
