Anais Mitchell - Shepherd

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters/Alt-Country/Americana or Indie-Folk, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Anais Mitchell - 'Shepherd' (2012)

This has "americana" written all over it. It is by Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell and features on her 2012 album, Young Man in America.  Her sweet voice may not be to everyone's taste but I think it is great, and that is what counts? right?

One interesting fact (although she probably has a lot more), is that her 2010 album, Hadestown, was a folk opera based on the Greek Orpheus myth based in the Great Depression. It featured Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Ani DiFranco. Hmm.

She will be playing some gigs in the UK, to check them out via her Facebook page.

I've got her 2013 album 'Child Ballads', but know little else by her. This is very nice.

She's not so much my cup of tea now but one song I really like by her is Cosmic American - check it out if you don't know it already, from the album Hymns For The Exiled (it makes me cry!) Quite by chance one evening in 2004 Mr SDS was on a long drive home with the radio on and Bob Harris (who he wouldn't normally listen to but it was all there was!) introduced that song. Mr SDS was so impressed, he came in raving about it and promptly ordered the album. So full of admiration for Anais's songwriting, he found her website and sent her a little email - and I'm very pleased to say she wrote a lovely message back straight away, I always think that's a great testament to her character and genuineness. I hadn't thought about her in years; good to know she's still out there doing her thing, thank you!

That's a nice story C. It's good to know that artists appreciate our appreciation. Just the other day I dropped a line to Chook Race, a band I recently raved about over at my place, and they also took the time to get back to me with a little message. I'm listening to 'Cosmic American' as I type - you're dead right, it's a lovely tune.
